For centuries, audiences throughout the world have been intrigued by variety or "vaudeville"
performers, as they deftly display their skills. Fire eaters, stilt walkers, clowns, acrobats,
jugglers, magicians, strolling minstrels, mime, ventriloquists; they share a great tradition.
Their appeal spans all generations.
Today, the cost for professional music acts is soaring. But even the smallest event can afford
expert variety artists. They usually come completely self-contained, avoiding additional
production cost. Arts grants and corporate funding are often available ( if you know where
to look).
Variety acts are adaptable to many different situations; opening for a grandstand headliner, or
working the ticket line. They can provide diversion as a fill-in between stock judging events.
They can add zest to a parade or community picnic. Special matinee performances can be
scheduled in conjunction with youth or senior citizen events. To enliven your talent shows,
queen competition, costume pageant or athletic games, try using a variety performer as a
"master of ceremonies." Put two or three variety acts together, and you have a unique and
exciting show for your main stage.
Strolling acts have a special advantage. They are able to entertain almost anywhere, with little
or no advanced set-up time. They can provide an exceptional one-on-one entertainment
exprience that patrons can't find anywhere else. Whether it's a close-up magic trick, a balloon
animal or simply a photo opportunity, a good variety performer is congenial as well as
professional. He's a effective PR man both on and off the grounds, So utilize him as a " good
will ambassador." Strolling performers can be used to promote your event. Because they're
attention-getters, strolling performers are effective at a shopping mall or town square promotion where brochures are being distributed.
If you use Variety acts, be sure to include their pictures in your poster, program and advertising, along with your grandstand events ( they have drawing power too)! Also remember, television, radio and newspaper reporters are always looking for a story that's out of the ordinary; variety acts can generate a lot of free media coverage for your event. Invite them to your press party.
Talk about value! variety acts perform three or four stage shows per day. Strolling acts work four or five hours daily. A good country or rock band will cost between $2,500 and $5,000 for a 90-minute concert. For that same cost , you could have as many as ten variety acts performing throughout the day and evening.
A variety artist provides fun for everyone! Plan to use one at your next event. You'll love him,
and so will your guests!
